Barcelona accuse PSG of 'inciting violence' with 'disturbing' tifo New York Times (Online) Laia Cervelló Herrero Barcelona have accused Paris Saint-Germain of “inciting violence” with a tifo displayed by the French club's fans before Tuesday's Champions League tie between the teams. A tifo was unveiled behind one of the goals at the Parc des Princes before kick-off of the league phase fixture. It depicted a masked figure destroying the Barcelona crest with a bloodied chainsaw and was accompanied by the message, “Massacre a la Parisienne” (Massacre, Parisian style). Barcelona described the display as “deeply disturbing” and said they had lodged a complaint with UEFA. A club statement read: “The club strongly condemns the incidents that took place when the tifo was displayed in the stands, including the images of a blood-covered chainsaw attacking the Barca crest. These images were deeply disturbing and conveyed a message that incites violence and hatred in sport. “Furthermore, banners displaying the explicit message 'PUTA BARCA' ('F— BARCA') were also shown. We consider this kind of imagery and language unacceptable, as it goes against the values of respect, fair play and sportsmanship that should be upheld in football. “We believe that football should be a space for healthy rivalry, mutual respect, and passion for the game, free from messages that promote hatred or violence.” PSG and UEFA have been approached by The Athletic for comment. PSG could face disciplinary action from UEFA should European football's governing body investigate the incident. Article 16 of UEFA's disciplinary regulations states that “the use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit a provocative message that is not fit for a sports event, particularly provocative messages that are of a political, ideological, religious or offensive nature” falls under supporter behaviour that clubs are liable for, and can be sanctioned with a €10,000 ($11,220; £8,380) fine. Barcelona were beaten 4-2 by PSG on Wednesday to leave them fifth in the league phase after three matches. The game took place against the backdrop of nationwide riots in France on Saturday, with night curfews in place across parts of Paris.
