What to know about Saints-Steelers NFL Paris game amid unrest, protests in city New York Times (Online) Jayna Bardahl The Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints will play the NFL's first game in Paris on Sunday, the league said, despite civil unrest across France. Protests began about a month ago, with high school students decrying the state of schools nationwide. The unrest has grown to include demonstrations over the cost of living and rising fuel costs, among other grievances. Unrest escalated last weekend to the worst riots the country had seen in decades. Nearly 2,400 arrests were made on Saturday, according to the New York Times , as protests turned violent, with government buildings attacked and an estimated 3,000 businesses across the country pillaged. The rioting largely subsided on Sunday, according to the Times, as the situation shifted into political finger-pointing over who was to blame. More protests are scheduled for Saturday, prompting French authorities to ban gatherings in some cities to avoid a repeat of last weekend's riots. The Saints-Steelers game is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. ET (3:30 p.m. local Paris time) Sunday at the Stade de France. With a capacity of over 80,000, Stade de France is the country's largest stadium. The venue is located north of Paris in the commune of Saint-Denis, about 8.5 kilometers (approximately 5 miles) from Place de la République, a large public square in central Paris where much of the violence relating to the protests occurred last weekend. Authorities issued curfews on Monday across parts of Paris, Nice and Lille, including at Place de la République, and have extended them over the week. On Monday, the U.S. Embassy in Paris issued a security alert recommending that people avoid demonstration areas and exercise caution if they unexpectedly find themselves near large gatherings. The Louvre Museum, one of Paris' most popular tourist destinations, closed on Monday until further notice due to the strikes. Art Basel, a popular art festival held at Grand Palais and scheduled to run through Sunday, announced it will end early due to expected riots. !function(){"use strict";window.addEventListener("message",(function(a){if(void 0!==a.data["datawrapper-height"]){var e=document.querySelectorAll("[id='datawrapper-chart-fuHOX']");for(var t in a.data["datawrapper-height"])for(var r=0;r
