USMNT's Adams uses face to draw red, but Europa League showdown vs. Pulisic doesn't materialize New York Times (Online) Paul Tenorio Tyler Adams was the face of a battle between Americans in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday — literally. The U.S. men's national team captain and Bournemouth midfielder took a mitt to the face from AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan less than a half hour into their matchup, earning the French goalkeeper a straight red card and giving Bournemouth its second penalty of the game. Marcus Tavernier buried that penalty — Justin Kluivert put away the first in the eighth minute — as Bournemouth took the two-goal advantage into halftime on a rainy night at home en route to a 3-0 win over Milan and Adams' USMNT teammates Yunus Musah and Christian Pulisic. Adams came off on the hour mark, with his side in full control and up a man. In a disappointment for U.S. fans hoping to see a showdown between U.S. stalwarts, Pulisic was kept on the bench by Milan manager Ruben Amorim. It could have been his first match opposing Adams since Leeds downed Chelsea 3-0 in August 2022 — a game in which another American, Brenden Aaronson, scored. Musah, conversely, was in Amorim's starting lineup to face off against Adams, with whom he partnered as part of the “MMA” trio of midfielders along with Weston McKennie at the 2022 World Cup. Given how the match unfolded, Pulisic never came on, which leaves him fully fresh to perhaps start vs. Udinese in Serie A at the weekend. That's effectively how Amorim utilized the U.S. star last week, playing him off the bench for 30 minutes midweek at Salzburg before starting him in the league vs. Atalanta. Tillman, who scored in a win over Lech Poznan last week , picked up the ball in the attacking half and carried it up the left wing before using the outside of his foot to find Hofmann, who buried a shot inside the near post. Tillman, who has just one assist in five Bundesliga appearances this season, played 74 minutes in the two-goal win. ✌️ goals in 3️⃣ minutes for Jonas Hoffmann and Bayer Leverkusen 😤 Peep USMNT's Malik Tillman's assist on the second goal 🇺🇸 Watch #UEL on @paramountplus 📺 pic.twitter.com/2SYBELDvSF — CBS Sports Golazo ⚽️ (@CBSSportsGolazo) October 22, 2026 Leverkusen sits atop the table with nine points and a plus-8 goal differential, having yet to concede in the competition. Bournemouth also has the maximum nine points from three matches and a plus-7 goal differential. Adams and Tillman lead a cohort of USMNT World Cup veterans playing in the Europa League this season, along with Pulisic, Musah, McKennie, Chris Richards, Tim Weah, Tanner Tessmann and Auston Trusty. It was another American, though, one who hasn't featured in a World Cup, that found himself on both the positive and negative side of one of the surprise results of the round. FC Dallas product Bryan Reynolds, now at French side Rennes, notched an assist in a 2-2 draw at Juventus. Facing off against McKennie, a fellow FC Dallas academy product, Reynolds helped Rennes get back into the match in Turin after the Bianconeri took an early 1-0 lead. The 25-year-old defender made a run up the right side to get on the end of a cross and head it back into the middle of the box for Mousa Tamari, who finished in the 15th minute. The right back was whistled for a penalty when a ball was headed back into the box and off his right arm, which he was holding up to signal for offside. It was a costly mistake for Reynolds and Rennes, as Juventus pulled even when Nick Woltemade buried the spot kick to salvage the draw.
