CHICAGO — On a night when Chicago honored late Hall of Famer Mike Ditka, Caleb Williams narrowly outdueled fellow class of 2024 quarterback Drake Maye in an exciting, back-and-forth offensive battle as the Bears topped the New England Patriots 30-24.
In his second game back from a hamstring injury, Williams went 22-for-33 passing for 308 yards and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Luther Burden III had four receptions for 130 yards and a touchdown, while running back D'Andre Swift added 78 yards and a score on the ground.
Maye, meanwhile, was excellent for the Patriots in defeat. The 24-year-old completed 24 of 31 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns — but he also threw a costly second-quarter interception, badly underthrowing his target in the end zone.
The Bears offense did not turn the ball over and did just enough on the night. But coach Ben Johnson's
trick-play handoff to guard Joe Thuney
in the red zone was a highlight, even though the officials correctly whistled a penalty.
The Patriots had a shocking offensive play of their own, as Maye and running back Rhamondre Stevenson turned a harmless screen pass with three seconds remaining in the first half into a wild 48-yard touchdown.
Still, it wasn't enough as Bears kicker Cairo Santos hit a career-long 58-yard field goal to put the game out of reach with 1:34 remaining.
