President Donald Trump suggested the NFL could have postponed Sunday's
scheduled game in Paris
as France prepares for a new round of protests this weekend amid civil unrest throughout the country.
“It's looking like tomorrow's going to be a bad day in France, so you worry about it,” Trump said when asked about the game outside of the White House on Friday. “I would have said the NFL could have probably postponed that match, if you want to know, because France is really in trouble.”
The Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints are scheduled to play the NFL's first game in the French capital on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. ET (2:30 p.m. local Paris time) at Stade de France. The NFL has said the game will proceed as scheduled and there have been no disruptions at league sites from ongoing protests, which last weekend escalated into the most violent riots France has seen in decades.
Protests began in mid-September with high school students decrying the state of education nationwide. The unrest has grown to include demonstrations over the cost of living and rising fuel costs, among other grievances. Last weekend, nearly 2,400 arrests were made, according to the New York Times, as protests turned violent, with government buildings attacked and an estimated 3,000 businesses around the country pillaged.
More protests are scheduled for Saturday, prompting French authorities to ban gatherings in some cities.
More than 70,000
police officers will be deployed on Saturday around the country, the New York Times reported.
