Harvey Elliott's difficult loan spell at Valencia from Liverpool hit a new low when he was sent off for picking up two yellow cards in the space of a minute in Saturday's defeat to Villarreal in La Liga.
Elliott was booked twice in quick succession for apparent dissent in the 89th-minute of the game at the Mestalla, having only replaced Javi Guerra after 70 minutes.
The midfielder appeared frustrated at a foul by teammate Filip Ugrinic on Georges Mikautadze, prompting referee Alejandro Quintero Gonzalez to act.
The game was level at 1-1 at the time of his dismissal, with hosts Valencia holding a man advantage after Villarreal's Pape Gueye had been sent off ten minutes earlier. But Mikautadze scored in the sixth-minute of stoppage-time to earn Villarreal an away win, and leave Valencia still second bottom of the La Liga table.
Elliott, 23, is yet to start or score since joining Valencia on a season-long deal from Liverpool in the summer, and he will now face a suspension for their Copa del Rey tie against Tavernes on Wednesday.
The former England Under-21 international is looking to get his career back on track after an unsuccessful loan spell at Aston Villa from Anfield last season. Elliott was frozen out by Villa head coach Unai Emery, starting just three matches in all competitions before returning to Liverpool at the end of the campaign.
