Nashville SC clinches MLS Supporters' Shield, eyes single-season points record New York Times (Online) Felipe Cardenas Nashville SC clinched the 2026 MLS Supporters' Shield Saturday, cementing the league's best record with a 2-0 win at CF Montréal. It is the club's second major trophy following its 2025 U.S. Open Cup final triumph over Austin FC. In what has now officially become a special season for Nashville, Saturday's win inches the Eastern Conference's top seed toward another historic feat: breaking the MLS single-season points record. Inter Miami earned 74 points in 2024 during Lionel Messi's first full season in MLS, breaking New England's 73-point haul in 2021. Nashville sits at 70 with three matches remaining, meaning the club could max out at 79. Coincidentally, Nashville has become Miami's on-field nemesis since the Argentine star's arrival in 2023. The two clubs have faced each other 14 times across multiple competitions in three seasons. Messi has scored 17 goals against Nashville in his career. But it appears that consistently challenging the league's most star-studded team on the field has strengthened Nashville's resolve. Head coach B.J. Callaghan has changed Nashville's tactical identity from a defensive-first side to a high-pressure attacking unit that still prioritizes hard-tackling defending. Nashville has conceded by far the fewest amount of goals (23) in MLS this season. Callaghan has created a recipe for success that maximizes his personnel and consistently puts opponents under stress, coupled with productivity from the right attacking designated players. Still, one of Nashville's strongest qualities is its ability to manage games effectively and control the late portions of a match. The club has a league-low three losses on the season. It's also proven dominant at home, unbeaten and nearly perfect in 15 games (14-0-1). Two Nashville players are in the top 10 among league leaders in goals scored. Messi entered the weekend leading with 25, but Nashville center forward Sam Surridge and playmaker Hany Mukhtar continue to keep pace with 18 and 17 goals, respectively. Fittingly, they scored the goals Saturday to finish off the Shield chase. Jacobs, who comes from the coaching tree of former Sporting Kansas City head coach and chief soccer officer Peter Vermes, is now among MLS's most respected front-office decision makers. He has built a strong spine, while elevating Nashville's play from wide areas after signing former San Jose Earthquakes winger Cristian Espinoza as a free agent in one of the coups of the winter. Espinoza's 14 assists are one off the league lead. Meanwhile, Surridge and Mukhtar are legitimate MLS MVP candidates in a race that's expected to go Messi's way for a third straight season. Surridge, 28, is a traditional striker who compliments Mukhtar's versatility in the final third. At 31, Mukhtar is hitting his second career peak after winning the league's MVP award in 2022. The German-born Mukhtar is a modern No. 10 who fits the ideal profile for an MLS playmaker. Goalkeeper Brian Schwake, a newly minted U.S. international, and center back Jeisson Palacios, are among the best in their positions, too. Schwake posted his league-leading 15th clean sheet in Saturday's crowning triumph. The club's first Supporters' Shield trophy is a testament to the strength of its project, which bodes well for what lies ahead: a highly anticipated run at MLS Cup beginning in November. History is not on the club's side, though; only three of the last 15 Shield winners have gone on to do the MLS Cup double. Regardless, by virtue of winning the Shield, Nashville has already secured its return to the Concacaf Champions Cup next year after a run to the semifinals in 2026.
