UCF shocks No. 2 BYU in double OT. Here's every wild thing that happened in a chaotic ending New York Times (Online) Matt Baker UCF injected more chaos into the Big 12 title race and College Football Playoff picture Saturday by upsetting No. 2 BYU 39-31 in double overtime thanks to one of the craziest, prolonged endings of the season. “That's the weirdest end of a game I've ever seen,” Knights coach Scott Frost said. Here's everything that made it so weird: · With the score tied at 24 at the 2-minute timeout, the Knights ran the ball twice. Both were stopped at the goal line, with Anisi Purcell blowing up quarterback Keyone Jenkins' fourth-down sneak. · UCF got possession back after a three-and-out. With 19 seconds left, UCF snapped the ball and appeared to lose a fumble that would have given BYU the ball past midfield. The turnover, however, was overturned because Jenkins' arm was moving forward. Because that wasn't enough, BYU was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after celebrating its (negated) fumble recovery. The 15 yards pushed UCF into field goal range — and the fact that it was an incompletion (rather than a fumble) gave the Knights five extra seconds to try to win it in regulation. · On first down with the clock stopped, UCF spiked the ball for some reason. · After another incomplete pass, UCF tried a 46-yard field goal on third down with 11 seconds remaining. Faletau Satuala blocked Will Stone's field goal, and Stone recovered it behind the line of scrimmage. That would have given UCF the ball back with one more chance to win it in regulation, but his helmet was ripped off. The Knights' backup kicker readied for the winning kick, but officials eventually determined that the lost helmet led to a 10-second runoff. UCF had no timeouts left, so regulation was over. UCF's score to answer was exciting but more conventional, a scrambling throw from Jenkins to Josh Derry. · The second overtime got weird, again. BYU got a third-down stop to force a short field goal … except the Cougars were flagged for roughing the kicker. UCF took the points off the board with the extra set of downs, then scored two plays later on a pass from Jenkins to Grayson Brousseau. The final one, on fourth-and-goal from the 4, fell out of tight end Walker Lyons' grasp to the ground.
